Bathroom Retreat: The Soul of Kalos

“ My favorite feature in my bathroom is, without question, the stained glass window. Inspired by our garden and memories of my late husband, Jori created something deeply personal… and when the sun streams through the different textures and colors of glass, it paints the room with shifting rays of color. Each day is a new experience… and it fills me with joy, but it also brings me comfort.

This serene, sculptural bathroom remodel blends livable luxury with artistry in every detail.

Anchored by a custom stained glass window—personally commissioned in memory of the homeowner’s late husband—the design celebrates both meaning and beauty.

The organic composition of the window, meticulously designed by Jori, inspired soft, curving forms throughout, balanced by clean architectural lines. As sunlight filters through, watercolor-like reflections wash over the microcement walls and floors, creating a space that shifts with the light.

We created a mosaic tile path set into the plaster floor, a hand-crafted vanity of microcement and white oak, and fully customizable fixtures in a stunning 14K gold satin brass finish. Together with integrated cabinetry and subtle cove lighting, the result is a sanctuary that honors memory while elevating everyday rituals into an artful experience.

KALOS

Jori Johnson |  74.5” x 46.5” | Stained Glass, 2024

καλός (Kalos) is a Greek word meaning “beautiful,” “good,” “honorable,” “magnificent,” "precious," and is used in the Bible’s Greek translation of the creation story when God declares the light and all He created as “kalos” — a perfect reflection of God’s beauty… and then on the seventh day He rested.

This piece is a celebration of life and beauty on many levels— the kind of beauty that goes deeper than surface level but lives in the depth of loving relationship. I wanted to create that feeling of feeling both complete rest and the fullness of life at the same time. The beautiful life journey and love that my client shared with her husband did not end with his passing, but instead, continues to grow and live in her spirit and memory. This is a love letter that wakes and sleeps with the passage of time, coloring each day with a different hue of life’s spectrum of beauty.

“Jori chose meaningful flowers for my husband and, at my request, included a hummingbird and butterfly. Being able to select the colors together made me feel part of the creative process. That collaboration was invaluable. I never felt Jori imposed her vision — instead, she guided, listened, and refined until it felt entirely mine.”
